Astrology Houses | The Psychological Areas of Life
The exact beginning point of each house is called its 'cusp', and is noted as degree - sign - minute at the line denoting house separation. The houses divide the chart into twelve Areas of Life, and the sign or signs in each house then show the quality or style characteristic of your experience in that 'arena'. The houseposition of each planet tells where in your life that planet's energy is most influential. The upper houses show what is going on in relation to the world outside yourself, and the lower houses refer to your body, personality and inner experience of life.
Astrology Houses | Classified into Cadent Angular Succedent Houses
The houses of an astrological chart are classified into three groups of four: angular houses [the first, fourth, seventh and tenth],
succedent houses [the second, fifth, eight and eleventh], and cadent houses [the third, sixth, ninth and twelfth]. Traditionally,
the cadent houses have been referred to as the mental houses, although this ascription applies best to the third house and the
ninth house [the houses of the "lower" and "higher" mind]. In classical astrology, cadent houses were regarded as the least
powerful houses in which planets could be positioned, while angular houses were the most powerful. Modern astrologers,
however, tend to think that planets placed in the angular houses have the most influence in the outer, surface aspects of a person's
life, and planets placed in the cadent houses have the most impact on one's inner life. Planets located in succedent houses
mediate inner and outer lives.
Astrology Houses | Angular Houses 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th house
Angular houses are regarded most powerful and do have the most influence in the outer, surface aspects of a person's life.
Astrology Houses | Succedent Houses 2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th house
Planets located in succedent houses mediate inner and outer lives.
Astrology Houses | Cadent Houses 3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th house
Cadent houses have the most impact on one's inner life.
Astrology Houses | First House
The Ascendant, or rising sign, indicates how we 'make an entrance' or come across, thus our appearance. It is the particular approach or style that others come to know as our trademark, the way we appear. It represents that which is uniquely us. The way we express or present ourselves is indicated by the Ascendant, which is said to be the most personal point in the natal chart since it is dependent upon the time we were born. [If we do not know the birth time, then we do not know the Ascendant.] The planet which rules the sign on the Ascendant is called the 'chart ruler'. The first house shows how we are able to express our deeper impulses and ideals through our personality and actions. It is a direct indication of how we integrate our purposefulness into our being. It is called the window of the soul, and indicates our appearance and personality. This is the essential stuff that bubbles up in us spontaneously. This house rules our personal appearance, propensities and everything about us that draws a reaction from our surroundings or others.
Astrology Houses | Second House The second house is the way we respond to and express the values we identify with. It has to do with how our life changes because of, or in response to, the ways we seek and use money, possessions and sexual energy. It has to do with how we adapt to, hold, possess, or have things. It is concerned with how we respond to or handle whatever impulses or unique and personal qualities we manifest via our first house. The second house always refers to how we secure ourselves materially, the kind of response we get from life and those around us. It specifically has to do with our values as they are expressed through money, possessions and sexuality, and the nature and style of our sexual responses.
Astrology Houses | Third House The third house has to do with the working out and exploring of all the details and ramifications of our daily experiences. It refers to learning, communications, short journeys, siblings and other relatives. It indicates the way we use our logical mind. The third house is concerned with explorations, investigations, inquiry and research of all kinds. It also rules connections, wires, tubes; anything that we can get through with our body, mind, voice, or letters. A very mental house, concerned with finding, furthering, expressing and seeking new information and experience, and all manner of questioning. It is esoterically the house of integration.
Astrology Houses | Fourth House The fourth house has to do with fullness of experience. It refers to giving and receiving nurturance and the sources of emotional security, our support matrix. Therefore it is an indicator of the mother. The fourth house is our home and the base from which we can work, feel, and experience. This is the emotional foundation of our being, where we send down roots, find or set our limits, and generally create an emotionally secure and comfortable environment for ourselves. It is the end of any searching we might have done in the third house. Here we settle down, and get in possession of the situation.
Astrology Houses | Fifth HouseThe fifth house has to do with creative self-expression, playfulness, romance, awareness and emotion, and all the many ways of seeking recognition. It also has to do with offspring, self-consciousness, ego and pride. Here there is a growing sense of self-confidence and a pride of ownership, since we begin to recognize and own our experience. A sense of direction and the pride of creation take hold at this point in our experience.
Astrology Houses | Sixth House The sixth house represents health issues, working conditions and relations with co-workers, and the learning and use of tools and techniques. It has to do with salvaging and preserving what is good and healthy in our experience. We begin to care for ourselves and our lives and thus health, hygiene and nutrition. The idea here is that we are able to analyze our experience and have thoughts about what is useful and what is not. The sixth house indicates an attempt to save the essence of an experience and eliminate whatever is effete or excessive.
Astrology Houses | Seventh House The seventh house is where we cross over from the personal houses to the transpersonal houses. We move beyond the personal sphere and start integrating into the world outside ourselves. It represents where we interact and co-operate with the 'other', and as such has to do with marriage, partnerships and all types of committed or ongoing relationships. It has to do with the social life, and all that carries us beyond our personal self into an awareness of other people. Here we begin to harmonize our personal needs with those of others. We can see what is needed for balance and completion and are committed to it; thus, marriage, partnership, and any other type of committed relationships are indicated in this house.
Astrology Houses | Eighth House The eighth house results from our fully grasping the nature of the completed personal experience in the first seven houses, what was furthering about it and what was detrimental. Here we realize and eliminate what was undesirable. The extra baggage is unloaded. It has to do with what we learn about ourselves and our values through the mirror of relationship, and the transformation which is a natural by-product of sharing possessions, sexual and emotional energies within the previous, seventh house. The eighth house, traditionally the house of death and rebirth, degeneration and regeneration, is concerned with getting rid of any excess in ourselves that we see we no longer need, the function of elimination. This house also covers initiation and any activities where we are transforming toward a more integral position, getting to the heart of things. The no-nonsense quality of the eighth house makes it good for business ventures since here we are stripping away the dross to reveal the truth or essence of the subject. It indicates the dynamics of sharing resources and energy, inheritances, and 'other people's money'. It is also the house of energy healing and occult teachings and practices.
Astrology Houses | Ninth House The ninth house has to do with what remains after the elimination process of the eighth house, or what is enduring from the entire cycle of self-discovery. It is the search for truth and higher knowledge, the broader understanding of life. It indicates our belief system, higher education, ideologies, religion and philosophy, and opening to the unfamiliar, including long journeys, either mental or physical. Here are the belief structures that endure the purification of the eighth house; the seed or essence of an entire cycle of experience. Essential ideas, philosophy, and all that is far-reaching are indicated, as well as what is alien or unfamiliar.
Astrology Houses | Tenth House The tenth house, at the top of the chart, represents the highest potential for achievement or recognition. It is directly overhead [to the south]. It is the house of clear, practical vision, plans and goals. In the natal chart, the tenth house represents where we can see what to do. It is therefore associated with achievement, career and vocation. The midheaven [MC] is the cusp of the tenth house, and is associated with our outer standing in the world, our reputation and fortune. It represents fame and honor since it is here that we have our most visible activity in the outer world, and our clearest vision of the goal. We can see and use; it is our vantage point or perspective. Planets transiting this house may provide moments of insight and clear-seeing as well as opportunities to achieve our goals.
Astrology Houses | Eleventh House The eleventh house is a movement away from the achievement represented by the tenth. It takes the clear idea seen in the tenth and moves to apply it to life, to keep it in mind or make it manifest for the world. The eleventh house has to do rewards for the achievements of the tenth house, with plans for action, group goals, cooperation, ideals and aspirations. It has to do with putting our visions and dreams to work. We have set our goals and defined our vision in the tenth house. Here we take action, in concert with others, to make these dreams into reality. Thus this house has always been connected with altruistic and humanitarian endeavors and trying to set them in motion. It is the house of friends and community, because when we are empowered by a real insight or vision, we share with all, irrespective of differences.
Astrology Houses | Twelfth House In the twelfth house we are faced with a choice. We are about to cross over from the more impersonal realm of ideals and inspiration into our actual personal manner of expression in the first. In the twelfth, we begin to face the difference between ideals and actuality. We are challenged to accept the mystery of life beyond our personal concerns, and surrender outcomes to a universal truth beyond our comprehension. The twelfth house is the house of the unseen realms. It covers sacrifices we may have to make in order to get or stay in touch with what is really important. This house is connected to prisons, institutions, confinement, betrayal and self-undoing. It is here that we must choose to accept some personal sacrifices for the sake of the message we are carrying or the truth we are seeking. It has to do with dreams and unconscious processes, spiritual guidance, the desire to find and surrender to a higher power.
